September 30, 2003 - 11:43 a.m. Eh what can I say it really has been awhile since I have update? Work has been busy, SCA has been busy, Fire Department has been busy make for life has been busy. Lets see if I can quickly get people up to speed. The Sire of Ravens Cove is far, but filled with very nice people. Academie of the Rapier was a lot of fun. I got to go down with Roland and Thjora (no driving for me yippee!) which was a fun and chatter filled drive, stay with Alejandro and Benefshe who have a lovely home and spend time here and there with some of the knitting crazies (I am not an addict I could stop at any time if I wanted to. I just dont happen to want to) Hurricane Isobel was really not terrible in my part of the world. No power loss, but we did have to boil water for several days. Given other peoples stories that was merely an incidental inconvenience that I feel guilty for even mentioning. I ran a 24 hour shift at the station that night and Friday day. Spent many hours of Friday driving about looking for downed power lines, trees in the road and flooded out areas. Happily I can report that my muscles are entirely recovered from my adventures with fire axe and tree removal. Oh did I ache. Far worse than the hurricane was the flooding that occurred the following Monday caused by a simple rainstorm. As it happens I was overnight at the Fire Station for that one too as the dept was short handed. Large portions of US 15 just north of the Coronation site were flooded out, and was closed for a few days. When it reopened there was a 6 mile strtch that needed to be remarked as the water had removed the lane markings. Over a half of a mile had to be milled and repaved as there was nearly an inch of the surface REMOVED from the action of the overflowing Goose Creek. Hell of a creek. There is nothing like waking up to an all hands emergency page in the middle of the night and flipping on the station radio to hear boat 17 marking up to remove people from a 2nd story window. Wow. This too is now better. This most recent weekend was Knight of the Heart. It was very well put together and quite nicely done. This event achieved something that as the SCA grows seems to be harder and harder and rare. A theme. The entirety of the day centered around a concept and drew the event out of the cookie cutter mould that we fall into so often and brought all to a different place. Some people liked the place, some people less so. I know that I enjoyed the hell out of it. Ragnarr did much to steal the show as it were for portions of the day. Let me explain, no too long let me sum up. King Ragnarr did not think going and challenging members of the populace would be proper so he did what any good King (or medieval prince) would do he came in disguise. Now Theo was all prepared with research and history to provide him with a historical disguise, but no. Ragnarr was nowhere to be found but Duke Anton was there, accompanied by squires. To say that I need therapy, to say that I laughed to hard I nearly cried, would not describe fully the entertainment factor found by that! Vlad has a hot tub. This is a good thing. Sunday we went to Ikea and bought more bookcases. All my homeless books can now be put away and shelved look there are some small gaps here and there I must need more books now! Ikea is a lovely place and I got to wander to hearts content with my Ragnarr all morning long. Sunday the Fire Station was short handed again (noticing a trend) so
I got called in. I never actually made it to the station before tones
went off I met the ambu at the scene and then proceeded to run 3 calls
in rapid sucession. Mind you there are entire days that there arent
three calls, and Sunday here we were with 3 in a four block area in an
hour in a half. Very busy is followed by very boring I washed and
waxed my car. Got home to find that Narr had assembled the bookcases.
How cool is that!
